JOB DESCRIPTION
The Lead Lab Technician is part of the Dexter Engineering team. This position is responsible for performing product testing through metallurgical, dimensional, and mechanical characterization of materials, components, and systems.
Specific duties include:
- Sets-up and operates test stands and equipment including but not limited to Fatigue Test Machines, Inertia Dynamometer, and Coordinate Measurement Machine
- Conducts microscopic examinations of metals and alloys to determine their structure, porosity, grain size, the presence of decarb, heat affected zone (HAZ) and other characteristics
- Examines metal and alloy samples to detect internal fractures, impurities, and similar defects in metals
- Tests samples in pressure device, environmental chamber, spectrometer, salt spray tester, Rockwell and micro-hardness tester and other apparatus to determine strength, hardness, chemistry, elasticity, toughness, or other properties of metal
- Leads and coordinates equipment repair with third party vendors under the guidance of the Test Lab Manager
- Assist with the development of mechanical tests
- Confers with engineering personnel to resolve fabrication problems relating to specifications and to review test plans
- Acts as a mentor within the engineer organization, providing guidance and encouragement to those less experienced
- Examines parts for conformance with dimensional specifications
- Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications
- Prepares graphs and charts
- Records, analyzes, and interprets test data and prepares technical reports for use by management
- Calibrates laboratory instruments
- Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Performs other tasks or duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s Degree in Engineering Technology / Mechanical Engineering or a comparable discipline is required
- 1 Year experience preferred
- Ideal candidates will be experienced with trailer or automotive repair/maintenance and have strong mechanical, electrical, and technical aptitude
- Microsoft software knowledge is required
- Must be an effective communicator, both verbally and electronically
- Must be a team player, innovative, self-motivated, and punctual
